Prompt Thinking: The New Core Skill for Founders

Founders don't need to code AI. They need to think in prompts — a discipline closer to good writing than to engineering.

Prompt Thinking: The New Core Skill for Founders

The best founders I coach share a strange habit: they talk to AI the way they talk to a brilliant, literal-minded new hire. Clear context, clear ask, clear constraints.

A prompt is a brief

Treat every prompt like a creative brief. State the audience, the goal, the format, and the tone you don't want. Vague prompts produce vague businesses.

Try this

Before you write your next prompt, finish this sentence: 'After reading this, the AI should be able to produce ___ for ___, avoiding ___.'

The founder's three prompts

  • The pressure-test prompt: 'Argue against my strategy. Find the three weakest assumptions.'
  • The customer-voice prompt: 'Rewrite my pitch in the words of a skeptical buyer.'
  • The Monday prompt: 'Given last week's notes, what should I stop, start, and double down on?'

Run those three weekly and you'll out-think founders spending ten times more on tools. Prompt thinking isn't a hack — it's a discipline, and like all disciplines, it compounds.
